Asbestos and Non-Asbestos Ferruginous Bodies - BAL Cytology - Lung

            In asbestos-associated pneumoconiosis, ferruginous bodies with and without asbestos fibers can coexist. In this case, we observe a ferruginous asbestos body that is straight, with the delicate transparent crystalline fiber inside. Beside it, we see another ferruginous body without an asbestos fiber that is curved, with a thicker black fiber at its core, which could correspond to a charcoal fiber or another mineral. Typical macrophages with dust particles can be observed, serving as a warning sign to look for ferruginous bodies.
