Polk was born 16 April 1899 in Marianna Arkansas, according to his passport documents, not December 25th as appears in many internet sources.

In 1924, he travelled to Paris listing his occupation as "Musician".

He had a brother, Olvester Polk, who applied for a passport at the same time. Olvester was also a musician and had a short career on the stage. Later in life, Olvester worked as a porter on transatlantic liners.

Oscar Polk was photographed several times by Carl van Vechten.

"Born in Marianna, Arkansas, he began his career in the early 1930s as a stage performer and made his film debut as Gabriel the Angel in "The Green Pastures" (1936). A popular character performer he appeared in "It's A Great Life" (1936), "The Green Pastures" (1936), "Underworld" (1937), "Gone With The Wind" (1939), White Cargo" (1942), "Reap The Wild Wind" (1942) and "Cabin In The Sky" (1943).
