Turning Night To Day

            Having run out from Adelaide over the course of the afternoon, three G&W Australia GM Class locomotives load grain at the Viterra silo complex in Pinaroo, SA.

Once a broad gauge connection between Ouyen (Victoria, Mildura Line) and Tailem Bend (SA), the line was converted to standard gauge within SA in 1998, with the portion of the line within Victoria remaining broad gauge.

Viterra closed their siding at Pinaroo in July 2015, with the later harvests to be transported by road to Tailem Bend or direct to port. As grain trains from Pinaroo was the only reason to keep the line open, G&W Australia mothballed the line.

The Victorian section of the line was converted to standard gauge in 2018 as part of standardisation works to Mildura, although only as far as Murrayville. This means that even if both ends of the line were open concurrently, it would still be impossible to run from Ouyen to Tailem Bend.
