Nyalam county comprises the townships of Menpu and Zurtso around the headwaters of the Bum chu River, and those of Tsangdong, Tsongdu, and Dram in the Matsang Tsangpo valleys. Nyalam means "yoke trail"- a reference to the ancient trade route that porters and pack animals would follow. The trading community of Dram are said to be among the most prosperous peoplein all Tibet. The county capital is located at Tsongdu,
