My in-laws moved to Sanibel Island many years ago, before it became a popular vacation destination. At that time, their reason for moving was that it's the third best shelling beach in the world, and they traveled all over the world collecting shells. Many shells in their collection were one of a kind, or very rare; others were common but they often had the prime examples and won "Best in Show" many times. At least one is now on loan to the world-famous Sanibel Shell Museum. It's been a fascinating hobby for them, and by osmosis, the rest of us learned a lot as well.

These three live shells, washed up after the stormy days in the Gulf of Mexico, are a tulip (with operculum showing), an olive (burrowing into the sand as we watched) and a fighting conch.

This is a short series of photos of live shells that washed up on the beach on Sanibel Island after two days of high winds in the Gulf of Mexico.
