ANALYZING THE ATOM FROM A PILOTLESS B-17 
In 1946, silver and yellow B-17 Flying Fortresses, so recently the heroes of the air war over Germany, were flown with no pilot on board in tests at Edwards before being sent to Eniwetok to serve as remote camera platforms during Operation Crossroads nuclear detonations. The B-17s performed their tasks, and some later starred in the movie Twelve O'Clock High.

Gen. Curtis LeMay observed a QB-17 drone controller during Operation Crossroads 1946 (Below). Cockpit of QB-17s tested at Muroc (Edwards) had robot mechanical arms clamped to throttles (right).
