The Coming of the Commercial Jet

Until the later 1950s, commercial aircraft had propellers. The jet engine, developed before World War Il, required such a large amount of fuel that they were impractical for commercial use. This changed with the development of the De Havilland Comet Jetliner. First flown In 1952, the Comet was the precursor of a new age of commercial transport.

Their success led to the development of commercial jets in the United States. In 1954, the Boeing 707, a leap of faith for Boeing which spent $15 million developing it, became the first domestic commercial jet to fly. Douglas, the other major contender in the commercial jet race, was next with its DC-8. It was a DC-8 which first brought commercial jet air travel to Las Vegas, when one flew in as part of the World Congress of Flight in 1959. Convair was the third major contender In the jetliner race, with its 880.

Airlines large and small began to use the new commercial jets, and passengers appreciated the greater comfort, speed, and quiet they provided. Other American and foreign aircraft companies tried to compete with their own commercial jet designs, but Douglas and Boeing dominated the market throughout the 1950s and 1960s.

The jet transformed commercial air travel. By the 1960s, jets were the standard for all major airlines.
