ca. 1500 - 'St. George, medallion and bird from a guild of St. George', Low Countries, Hallepoort, Koninklijke Musea voor Kunst en Geschiedenis, Brussel, Belgium

            St. George, flanked by probably a donor and his heraldic devices, is depicted here on a medallion of a "gildebreuk" (Flemish/Dutch for a guild master's chain) of a guild of St. George. The bird of the gildebreuk also survives but the original chain is lost.
The back of the medallion shows St. George slaying the dragon with the princess and castle in the background and a scroll saying 'Sancte Georgi ora pro nobis'.
Both the medallion and the bird have the same craftman's mark consisting of a crowned A and a merloned tower.

Highly popular in both the Northern and Southern Netherlands, but especially in Flanders and Brabant, was the "jay shoot", an important annual event of the archery guilds. The competition included shooting the wooden jay or bird from a tall pole. The winner became "King" of the guild and was allowed to wear the chain. Several emblems were attached to it, including a silver or even gilded silver jay or bird. Sometimes these birds have the body of a pigeon, but more often they look like parrots with their hooked beaks.
