Caracalla: 3/4 right (Copenhagen 2028)

            Roman marble portrait of the emperor Caracalla, son of emperor Septimius Severus and Julia Domna. Proclaimed co-emperor with his brother Geta after the death of his father in 211, but after the murder of Geta, he ruled alone until 217.  This portrait has been dated to that last period, i.e., between 212 and 217 CE.  The short military haircut and tough expression of this "soldier-emperor" had great impact on subsequent imperial portraits.
