Yosemite Valley is a location I often find very challenging to shoot. Whenever I make this statement, people often ask me how challenging it can be to shoot at one of the most iconic landscape photography destinations. The answer to that question is a bit complicated. Still, the struggle is not due to the lack of interesting subjects or views, but because there are so many amazing images of the valley out there, it's challenging to take an original image. Add to that the epic nature of the popular spots, the fear of missing out is too tough to break out of so that you can explore. The first couple of times I visited, I rarely ventured outside of the established viewpoints.

After the second visit, I noticed that my keeper rate from Yosemite trips is unusually low. It was not because the images were terrible, but I compared my pictures with some of the epic shots of Yosemite valley that I have seen, and my photos didn’t seem that impressive. It took me a while to realize that at locations like Yosemite, conditions often dictate how your images turn out and all a photographer can do is be prepared to take advantage of the opportunities presented. On my first couple of visits, the sky was pretty bland, but we had some storms pass through the valley on our third visit. On a beautiful cold evening at the tunnel view location, we witnessed winds push massive cloud structures into the narrow valley. For the most part, we could not see the iconic landmarks at all, but every once in a while, a strong gust of wind will move the clouds around to provide us with an occasional glimpse of the classic view of Yosemite Valley. After watching it happen a couple of times, I was ready when the third time it happened.
