This is what you see if you look straight down from the arch to the east (and you have telephoto-eyes)--a huge set of stairs leading down to the Mississippi River. The stairs actually used to just be on the edges, with he center being filled with plantings. Why it was changed, I do not know, but I sure am glad they did it without handrails all over the place.

For those of you who don't know Ludovic--or 8.59cc, as some knew him, was one of those flickr-users who not only took striking, clever and powerful photos, but his comments would make even the grumpiest readers day better. A while back he just disappeared off the site and was na'er heard from again.

A real loss.
