            An extremely obnoxious fellow selling Rudraksha rosaries at Pokhara Lake, Nepal. Yes, this picture is a bit out of sequence- we are at a pit stop en route from Chitwan to Pokhara, and I had shot this picture a couple of days later in Pokhra, but I am featuring it here to illustrate what Rudraksha is all about. Rudraksha is a Sanskrit compound consisting of the name Rudra (the Hindu god Shiva) and akṣha (third eye- yes, the Hindu god Shiva has the dubious reputation among the believers of having a third eye on his forehead which burns the enemy to ashes. Ouch!). Elaeocarpus ganitrus or the Rudraksha tree grows in the area from the Gangetic plain in the foothills of the Himalayas to South-East Asia, Nepal, Indonesia, New Guinea to Australia, Guam, and Hawaii.  Rudraksha seeds are covered by an outer husk of blue colour when fully ripe, and for this reason are also known as blueberry beads. The blue colour is not derived from pigment but is structural. The Rudraksha is an evergreen tree that grows quickly and begins to bear fruit in three to four years. As the tree matures, the roots buttress, rising up narrowly near the trunk and radiating out along the surface of the ground. More notes about the Rudraksha tree appeared earlier in this album.
