I least expected to see a train line at the Saiyok Noi waterfall

            I least expected to see a train line at the Saiyok Noi waterfall site, so I stood transfixed here for a couple of seconds, after which I took this picture. The engine was freshly painted and the ballast on the track appeared to be fairly recent as well. I am in Kanchanaburi, Thailand on a day tour from Bangkok. Most travelers come to Kanchanaburi to learn about the horrors of the Death Railway- an infamous railway line constructed by the Japanese during WW- II through dense forest and inhospitable terrain, using POWs and labourers, about 100,000 of whom died in the process. We have been checking out all these all morning and I was frankly quite relieved to move away from the horrors of that railway and move away to a remote jungle location of the Saiyok Noi waterfalls. But sadly, no. The Death Railway comes to haunt you here as well, as the line passed very closed to the waterfalls. Detailes of the locomotive you see at the far end appear in subsequent pictures later in this album. I missed spotting the stoves and cooking area used by the Japanese at this site during the war- I did not look for them as I did not know about these at the time. I wonder now if these are in the sheds you see at the far end at extreme left? (Kanchanaburi, Thailand, Oct. 2008)
