            A little later on...“Standing just below the junction of Bovenover and Onderlangs, KB Jacobsen finds Oberwachtmeister (Master Sergeant) Josef Mathes, Commander of 3. Bttr./Stug-Brig. 280, standing up in the commander’s cupola and watching the grenadiers as they search  the last of the houses for British troops. During the morning’s push up the Onderlangs, Mathes’ Stug III was hit by a British PIAT round. In this frame, the point where the round struck on its left front plate is visible, just to the left of the Saukopf (pig’s head) cast gun mantlet, blasting away the zimmerit antimagnetic mine paste upon impact. Later in the day he was killed in action [by small arms fire] and received a posthumous Knights Cross on 4th October.”  Spezzano, p. 166.
