Here's another shot from my recent trip to Marazion...

It's a very typical shot of St Michael's Mount. I'd image just about every visiting tourist with a smart phone has made an image with a nearly identical composition. And every photographer, amateur or pro, has planted their tripod on the causeway and pointed their lens at the mount!

I guess this composition is shot so much because it just works! If a castle on a small island just off the beach wasn't enough, the cobbled causeway emerging from water provides some extra magic to scene. The causeway also acts a natural lead in line to direct the eye to the mount as focal point.

OK, I may be playing the effort I put in down a little. Research and planning is key, plus a little bit of luck!...

I generally choose to visit the mount on a mid-tide - when the causeway is just being revealed or flooded by the tide. I also prefer to shoot at sunrise - for the quality of light and the solitude. This photo just wouldn't be the same with 100+ people walking through the shot! For this particular trip, my alarm woke me at 4.30am! Then there's all the technical stuff like using a soft grad ND filter to control the brightness of the sky, a 10 stop ND to lengthen the exposure and post processing - which is an ongoing learning process!
