NORTH HEAD LIGHTHOUSE c. 1897-1898

The North Head Lighthouse has a rich history dating back to the late 19th century. It was constructed between 1897 and 1898 to address the navigational challenges faced by ships approaching from the north, as the nearby Cape Disappointment Lighthouse was often obscured. The lighthouse was designed by Carl Leick and features a 65-foot tower set on a 130-foot cliff, providing a focal height of 194 feet.

The lighthouse was first lit on May 16, 1898, using a first-order Fresnel lens that was transferred from the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse. This lens was later replaced by a fourth-order lens in 1935, and eventually by a modern optic in the 1950s. The original first-order lens is now on display at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Cape Disappointment State Park.

The lighthouse keepers and their families led a remote and challenging life. The first head keeper, Alex K. Pesonen, served from the lighthouse’s inception in 1898 until his retirement 26 years later1. Notably, Mabel E. Bretherton was the only female keeper at North Head, serving from 1905 to 1907.

In 1961, the lighthouse was automated, and in 2012, ownership was transferred to Washington State Parks. Restoration efforts are ongoing, supported by the state and the non-profit group Keepers of the North Head Lighthouse. Copilot
