Marker reads:

Rock Run Mill. Built circa 1725. Owned by John Steel this grist mill was in successful operation as early as 1731. At the same period a ferry was operated about one-half mile downstream at a crossing known as upper ferry.

Rock Run Mill

This stone gristmill located at the northern end of Port Deposit is two stories high and three bays wide on a high basement. Because it has been used for several different purposes, the interior does not retain much machinery, but the mill is one of the few mills in good restorable condition remaining in the county.

Although of uncertain date, the present mill almost certainly succeeded the one built in 1725 and operated by Jone Steel in 1731, when it was described as a 'Merchants' Mill.' At that time a merchant mill was a large enterprise that produced flour for trade rather than just for local use. The miss was operated in the late 19th century by John and Charles Fox, later by William Nesbit, and then Rumsey Smithson, Sr. It served as a sausage factory in 1940 when recorded in the WPA Guide to the Old Line State. Nearby is a three-story Italianate miller's house and two frame commercial buildings.
