a wonderful mother

            This mother Mallard has stuck by her brood, which first numbered eleven, but now is down to seven.  They are almost as large as she now, and may be able to fly, although I haven't seen them on the wing.  It has been a moving experience to watch her protect her chicks, and to see how fast they have grown.  (See some other recent photos of them in my stream.)
