Inmate 22486 - New Jersey State Prison Cemetery - Hamilton, NJ

            Visited NJ State Prison Cemetery today in Hamilton, NJ.    Took a bunch of shots and then researched them on findagrave.com.  Contributor and Flickr member Bob Cleary did a lot of homework to figure out the names of these inmates, whose graves bears only their prison number. I came across Howard E. Jefferson.  I then looked him up in old newspapers and came across this article:

Negro Farmhand Executed in Chair – Death House Vacant for First Time Since 1942
New Jersey’s electric chair claimed its second victim within a month last night when Howard E. Jefferson, 30, Salem County Negro farmhand, was put to death for the knife slaying of his one-time employer, Mrs. Beulha Hessler, 83-year-old Woodstown widow.

Escorted by guards, the five-foot, four-inch tall Jefferson, who showed no emotion, strode into the State prison execution chamber at 8:01 P.M. and was pronounced dead by the prison’s resident physician, Dr. Howard Wiesler at 8:08 P.M.

Before seating himself in the electric chair, Jefferson paused briefly to glance at the 23 witness including Mayor William Ware, of Woodstown, a friend of the slain woman. 
The execution of Jefferson, who is survived by his parents and several sisters and brothers living in Dover, Del., left the New Jersey’s death house vacant for the first time since he entered it on January 16, 1942.
