            (Not genuine) Gurning on the Fourth Plinth (One and Other) performance art in Trafalgar Square, London.

The acts seen here are not proper gurning, they are more straightforward facial contortions and gestures. In this photo, the loo seat replaces the traditional horse collar (see below).

Gurning (also less well known as 'chucking') contests are a rural English tradition. The gurner performs the gurn while wearing a horse collar around their neck. 

Gurning is thought to have originated in 1297 at the Egremont Crab Fair, named after the crab apple, when King Henry III granted the fair a Royal Charter. Crab apples are bitter, and so in celebration of the event, people contorted their faces.

Each year, competitions are held regularly in some English villages, with contestants framing their heads through a horse collar. The World Gurning Championship takes place annually in Egremont, Cumbria, England.
