Hiking in the wild hinterland of National Parc Di Orosei

Golfo di Orosei is Sardinia’s largest national park. Here the high mountains of the Gennargentu abruptly meet the sea, forming a crescent of dramatic cliffs riven by false inlets, scattered with horseshoe-shaped bays and lapped by exquisitely aquamarine waters. Beach space is at a premium in summer, but there’s room for everyone, especially in the rugged, elemental hinterland. The park includes the highest peak on the island, and the Supramonte, a vast limestone and dolomite highland - Monte Corrasi, 1463 m, rich in underground waters and marked by wild, dramatic scenery. The must see areas include the karst spring of Su Gologone, the main in Sardinia; the canyon of Su Gorropu, the deepest in Italy, and perhaps in all Europe, with walls reaching a height of 450 m; Su Suercone, an enormous sink-hole which includes a stand of ancient yew trees, caves and chasms; extending for about 15 km; and the Gulf of Orosei with soaring limestone cliffs pierced by sea caves. Its animal life includes endemic species exclusive to Sardinia: amongst the mammals the mouflon, whose numbers are on the increase, reintroduced Sardinian deer and roe deer, wild cats, foxes and dormice. Bird species include the griffon, Eleonora’s falcon, the golden eagle, the goshawk, the sparrow-hawk and the buzzard; amphibians, reptiles and insects, including the rare Corsican swallowtail butterfly. There are also important cave-dwelling invertebrates and the monk seal, which has given its name to the Cave of the Bue Marino and whose sightings in the Gulf of Orosei are increasingly rare. it is believed one of the most endangered mammals in the world.

Locals will tell you that the only way to see Sardinia’s startlingly beautiful coastlines and rugged hinterland is to get out and hike. And there is no better place to hit the trails than in the island’s wild east, where mountains collide pectacularly with the Mediterranean in the Golfo di Orosei National Park. We rijden via de Strada Provenciale 37 langs het dorpje Urzulei richting het nationale park Golfo di Orosei. Het kerkje Parrocchia San Giovanni Battista ligt prachtig gelegen in de vallei van Urzulei. Aan de oostkust van Sardinië ligt het grootste nationale park Golfo di Orosei. Een gebied met prachtige hoge bergen die abrupt eindigen in de zee, wat zorgt voor een adembenemende kustlijn. Door de hoge bergen zijn de stranden aan de golf alleen te bereiken door urenlang te hiken of met de boot. En vogels zoals de de Eleonora's valk, steenarend, havik, sperwer en de buizerd. Ook amfibieën, reptielen en insecten, waaronder de zeldzame Corsicaanse zwaluwstaart vlinder. Er zijn ook belangrijke zeegrot bewoners waaronder de monniksrobben. Het is waarschijnlijk het meest bedreigde zeeroofdier: de populatie bestaat uit minder dan vijfhonderd dieren.
