Early N.O.W demonstration at White House: 1969

The National Organization for Women (NOW) pickets the White House May 7, 1969 protesting discrimination against women and calling for “equality for women now.”

Signs carried in the photo read “Repeal Abortion Laws N.O.W.,” “Revise Social Security Laws N.O.W.,” “Pass the Equal Rights Amendment N.O.W.,” and “Best Kept Secret since 1923…The Equal Rights Amendment. N.O.W. demands passage this year.”

N.O.W. was formed in 1966 after the failure of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to enforce Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Part of their 1966 founding statement reads, "...the time has come to confront, with concrete action, the conditions that now prevent women from enjoying the equality of opportunity and freedom of choice which is their right, as individual Americans, and as human beings."

At the time many states outlawed abortion altogether or had restrictive abortion laws. The U.S. Supreme Court did not legalize abortion in the U.S. until its 1973 Rowe v. Wade decision.

The demand for revising social security laws in its treatment of women would lead to legislation over the next 10 years relaxing disability benefits requirements for widows and wives, removing a cap on divorced wives benefits, eligibility for benefits for divorced wives changed from 20 years of marriage to 10 years, among other changes.

The effort to pass a Constitutional amendment to ensure equal rights for women passed Congress in 1972, but the drive was stalled as only 34 of 38 states necessary had passed it. Congress put a seven-year deadline on passage and later extended it, but the necessary states didn’t ratify it before time expired.

Recent efforts have brought the required states up to 38, but it is unclear if the courts will uphold the ratification since several states have rescinded their original vote in favor and the ratification occurred long after the original congressionally-imposed deadline.
