            Here's the dry-rot damage to the facing plywood of a front door. The thick reinforcement is of uncertain material but the screws attaching it are common wood screws, I've felt the ends inside the door. (I made this panorama with my iPhone. I tidied up at the left edge and one spot on the right, artifacts are easily found. The wavy shape of the plate is an artifact itself. The whole business would benefit from a good sanding and replacement of the delaminated area.)

I have a brass kick panel to cover it but need to make it good before attaching the kick panel. Jean wondered of a wood filler or putty would work - Bondo? My first thought was cut to fit wood blocks.

Maybe drill through the facing and place large wooden dowel slices between the front and back faces. Effectively like bosses in a metal or plastic case. 

Still going back and forth about removing the lower kick plate, which must be anchored to the bottom of the door. Is it better to leave well enough alone and add the 8" of new plate above it, looking slightly clumsy? Or take it off and deal with the slings and arrows of whatever it conceals? 

I had remembered the screws holding front plate as being the security version that can be driven in but not removed, but this photo suggests they're just typical bladed heads.
