Red Peak and the Nuchu Range

            The jagged peaks of the Nuchu Range (aka Gore Range) are bathed in the morning light, with Red Peak (13189 ft / 4020 m) dominating the skyline. Moisture flowing in from the south is beginning to foster the formation of clouds, and thankfully has replaced the smoke-laden airmass from the northwest that had been dominating the skies for weeks. Small tarns dot the treeline landscape below in the headwaters of South Willow Creek, which subsequently feeds the Blue and Colorado Rivers. This was the view from a camp site on Eccles Pass from a backpacking trip I took this past summer. My last visit to this valley was 44 years ago (!) on a backpacking trip with my brother.
