Gnarly Snag, a Wizard, and A Massive Caldera

            Looking over a crag on the edge of Crater Lake across towards Wizard Island and Mount Scott (8929’/ 2721 m) on the far horizon. Crater Lake was formed 7700 years ago after the eruption and subsequent collapse of Mount Mazama, one of the numerous volcanic peaks of the Cascade Range. Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the U.S. (2nd in North America, behind Great Slave Lake) with a maximum depth of 1949’/ 594. The evening light is creeping down the rim of the caldera, and the wind has picked up significantly with gusts visible in the lake. The haze on the horizon is from several fires burning to the northwest in Oregon and Washington.
