Highway of Heroes

Went home recently on a very brief overnight-and-back-the-next-morning trip, to see my folks and do some errands; took these two pics there.

The Highway of Heroes is the portion of Hwy 401 between the Glen Miller Road exit in Trenton and Hwy 404 / Don Valley Parkway in Toronto, as well as the roads from C.F.B. Trenton to the 401, along which the bodies of Canadian soldiers killed in action, mostly from our Afghanistan mission, travel from the airbase to a coroner's office in Toronto. Whenever a fallen soldier returns home to Canada, and is taken along this route, lots of Canadians turn out (both at CFB Trenton, and at highway overpasses all along the route) to honour his / her memory.

As it happens, this is most of the route between my old home (where my parents still live), and where I live now.

The above sign is on Hamilton Road, heading west, located just slightly west of the intersection with RCAF Road, close to the airbase, and a few minutes' drive from the 401.

*Update: There's a great tribute to the fallen soldiers, a song written by the Trews, simply called "Highway of Heroes"; here's the video on YouTube. Proceeds from sales go to a charity for the families of the fallen.
