February 4, 035/365 (1862/2192)- I was on my way to lead my Pub Theology group downtown while listening to news on the radio of what was happening in Midland City, AL. A week ago a deranged man shot and killed a school bus driver, then abducted 5-year-old special needs Ethan into an underground bunker. Even though it got some national attention it was almost local for us; Midland City is about 85 miles behind me on this same road.

After a week it was obvious that communications were breaking down, law enforcement did what they had to do to safely rescue Ethan, which also took the life of the abductor. Ethan was taken to a local hospital for observations and reunite with his family; I sure hope he got to see this spectacular sunset!

Tonight we offered prayers for all involved but at my request we offered special prayers for the officers that took the abductors life. I have spent a fair amount of time around officers as a volunteer chaplain. They hope and pray that they can go their whole career without having to fire their guns except on the gun range. Taking another life is the last thing they hope to do, but they also will do their job when they are needed. I pray that they will be OK with their actions.
