The 'Balmoral' needs your help

Many years ago, a day at the seaside was incomplete without a trip on a 'steamer'. Usually that meant wandering along the pier to the landing stage situated at the seaward end, and joining a 'pleasure steamer' for a trip around the bay, or some other local point of interest. The MV Balmoral, seen passing beneath the raised roadway of Tower Bridge on 30th June 2008, has been responsible for keeping the 'pleasure steamer' tradition alive. Built in 1949 for the Southampton Red Funnel fleet for their service to Cowes, Isle of Wight, she later transferred to the Bristol Channel with P&A Campbell's White Funnel fleet. Withdrawn in 1980, she was saved to become a floating restaurant in Dundee. That venture failed, but in 1985 she was saved by the supporters of the Paddle Steamer 'Waverley' whose undertook a major renovation for 'Balmoral' to re-enter service in 1986. Heritage Lottery funding has secured other major work on the ship, including the provisions of new engines. Like 'Waverley', 'Balmoral' is a member of the National Historic Fleet, which recognises the ship as being of national historic importance. Currently she is laid up in Bristol Docks, and subject to an ongoing appeal for £350,000 to fund a major refit to ensure she will again be back in action during 2015.
