Gobowen - a photo on Flickriver

            Gobowen is probably the most substantial surviving station between Shrewsbury and Wrexham; although retaining both platform buildings, that on the northern (left) side is now let commercially. That on platform 1 retains the ticket office which is privately run by not for profit Severn-Dee Travel. Also each platform retains it's distinctive 'half-barrel' type awning. It was once the junction for Oswestry, the latter now probably one of the largest towns not having a rail connection, following the withdrawal of the shuttle service to Gobowen in November 1966. It opened in 1848 by the Shrewsbury to Chester Railway and was designed by Thomas Mainwaring Penson, and is a Grade II listed. The only material change is the removal of there GW-style footbridge in 1987. On 1st April 2013 Arriva Trains Wales Class 158 DMU No. 158835 approaches with a train which the destination board says is for Wolverhampton; normally this service is likely to go through to Birmingham International but on this day (Easter Monday) trains were being truncated due to engineering work.
