Eisenbahnmuseum Bochum. Die Zahnradlokomotive 97 502 aus dem Jahr 1923.

            Dieses Exponat ist wirklich etwas Besonderes: Die Lokomotivbaureihe 97.5 bestand nur aus vier Exemplaren. Und diese Maschinen waren nur auf einer einzigen Strecke im Einsatz, nämlich auf der Zahnradbahn von Honau nach Lichtenstein in Württemberg. Die Loks sind ursprünglich von der Königlich Württembergischen Staats-Eisenbahn bestellt worden (und sollten die Baureihenbezeichnung Hz tragen). Aber als das erste Exemplar im Jahr 1922 von der Maschinenfabrik Esslingen fertiggestellt wurde, war längst die Deutsche Reichsbahn gegründet worden, die somit erster Besitzer der Fahrzeuge wurde und sie später in die Baureihe 97.5 einsortierte.
Die kräftigen Dampfloks verfügten über zwei separate, übereinander angeordnete Dampftriebwerke, die auf den Bildern gut zu erkennen sind. Das obere trieb das Zahnrad an, das wiederum mit der Zahnstange zwischen den Schienen in Eingriff stand. Das untere wirkte auf die Schienenräder. Die beiden Dampfmaschinen konnten für die Fahrt auf den Zahnstangenstrecke miteinander gekoppelt werden, so dass sie nach dem Verbundprinzip arbeiteten und die Kraft des Dampfes zweimal hintereinander nutzten. Das untere Triebwerk konnte bei der Fahrt auf Gleisen ohne Zahnstange auch einzeln betrieben werden. 
Erstaunlicherweise sind von den ursprünglich gebauten Exemplaren der Reihe 97.5 immerhin drei Stück erhalten. Eine der Loks ist gegenwärtig sogar betriebsfähig und befindet sich in ihrer alten Heimat.

English translation:
This exhibit is really something special: Only four examples of the class 97.5 locomotive were built. They spent all their working life on one single route, namely on the cog railway from Honau to Lichtenstein in Württemberg. The engines were originally ordered by the the Royal Württemberg State Railway. But when the first one was finished by the Esslingen machine factory in 1922, the State Railway of Württemberg had become part of the newly founded Deutsche Reichsbahn. 

The locomotives featured two separate steam engines which were arranged one above the other. The upper one drove the gear, which in turn meshed with the rack between the rails. The two steam engines could be coupled together for travel on the rack and pinion route, so that they worked according to the compound principle and used the steam two times. The lower engine could also be operated individually when traveling on tracks without a rack. 
Surprisingly, three of the originally built examples of the 97.5 series have been preserved. One of the locomotives is currently operational.
