鼠壳粿/鼠曲粿/茨壳粿 (Teochew Style Steamed Savoury Cakes)

            The 'ancestor' of Singapore's "饭粿" (Mandarin)/ "Bun Kueh" or "Png Kueh" (Teochew). 

In Chaozhou, the name literally translated into "Mouse Shell Cake", which is a 'twist' from the herb called "鼠曲草" [Gnaphalium affine D. Don], originally used to colour the original version of these steamed cakes - colouring them a blackish hue. I can surmise that pink/red was later used for auspicious purposes.

There are 2 main fillings - both savoury - salted mung bean paste or glutinous rice with mushrooms, peanuts and dried shrimps. I prefer the latter a lot more.

This was from a stall selling these traditional cakes and I love the vibrant pinkish colours of these celebratory cakes.
