            Rugged but beautiful landscape continued all the way from Yen Minh to Lũng Cú Flag Tower that was the monument marking the northernmost territory of Vietnam.

Ha Giang became a battleground for the 1979 Sino-Vietnam War that was initiated by China under Deng Xiaoping who intended to "punish" Vietnam for ousting the China-supported Khmer Rouge out of Phnom Penh. 

People's Liberation Army invaded into Vietnam from several border crossings to take control of Hanoi. It was not successful, however, and instead, they retreated when they heard a news that the Vietnamese troop in Phnom Penh started moving northward to attack PLA. Routing PLA left landmines and destroyed key infrastructure in Ha Giang to prevent Vietnamese chase attacks.

There were small scale invasions from China after the war, and China supported ethnic minorities in Vietnam for rebellions against Kinh Vietnamese, which supposedly created a sensitive political situation.  

Consequently, Ha Giang had been closed for tourism despite its natural beauty until the 21st century.
