Troglodyte mignon, Eurasian Wren - a photo on Flickriver

Le Troglodyte mignon (Troglodytes troglodytes syn. Nannus troglodytes) est une espèce de petit oiseau d'une grande vivacité. Il mesure à peu près dix centimètres.

Avec ses 9 grammes, le Troglodyte est l'un des plus petits oiseaux. Mâles, femelles et juvéniles ne peuvent être distingués. Son corps rond est vêtu d'un plumage brunâtre et légèrement barré. Il a en outre un bec mince et très pointu. Ce petit oiseau est surmonté d'une petite queue, presque toujours dressée verticalement. De plus, il fait partie des oiseaux les plus petits d'Europe après le roitelet. Son vol est rectiligne sur de courtes distances.

Cette espèce vit en Europe, en Afrique du Nord et en Asie, les populations d'Amérique du Nord étant dorénavant considérées comme des espèces distinctes (Troglodytes hiemalis et Troglodytes pacificus, le Troglodyte de Californie). Commun dans les forêts et les jardins à épais fourrés, le mâle construit plusieurs gros nids de mousse, en forme sphérique, à faible hauteur, dans le creux d'un arbre ou le trou d'un mur. À l'intérieur de l'un des nids, la femelle pond et couve ses œufs tandis que le mâle, lui, en occupe un autre.

The Eurasian Wren (Troglodytes troglodytes), is a very small bird, and the only member of the wren family Troglodytidae found in Eurasia. In Anglophone Europe, it is commonly known simply as the Wren. It was once lumped with Troglodytes hiemalis of eastern North America and Troglodytes pacificus of western North America as the Winter Wren.
It is also highly polygynous, an unusual mating system for passerines.

It occurs in Europe, a belt of Asia from northern Iran and Afghanistan across to Japan. It is migratory in the only northern parts of its range.

The scientific name is taken from the Greek word "troglodytes" (from "trogle" a hole, and "dyein" to creep), meaning "cave-dweller", and refers to its habit of disappearing into cavities or crevices whilst hunting arthropods or to roost. The taxonomy of the genus Troglodytes is currently unresolved, as recent molecular studies have suggested that Cistothorus spp. and Thryorchilus spp. are within the clade currently defined by Troglodytes.
