Calling out for dinner

            This is what I think is a Cooper's Hawk fledgling. She's calling out to her siblings who are sharing a fresh kill; shortly after this shot she flew over to their tree and took her turn at the meal.

Identifying these hawks has proved tricky...there are examples of both Cooper's and Red-Tailed hawks that have similar patterns in their fledge/juvenile period. 

While observing these raptors from a local trail, you can hear the obvious call of a Cooper's Hawk parent, "kac-kac-kac", over and over again, and these birds seem to respond mostly with a "kik" call, both to the apparent parent and their other fledglings.

Until today that is. I observed this particular girl making calls that sound and awful lot like weak red-tail skrees. I have a somewhat poor quality video I got mostly to document the sounds, as light in these woods is very poor and I'm very amateur at motion capture still. It is a very interesting conundrum! I'll need to get better views of their back feathers and other indicators if I can in the coming days, or see how their patterns develop as they age.
