A Four-spotted Chaser dragonfly undergoing metamorphosis from the larval (nymph) stage into adult dragonfly. The nymph spends its life underwater for an average of three years, finally hauling itself up onto a reed stem where the chemical process begins. The adult dragonfly breaks slowly out of the larval skin with head and thorax exiting via a hole where the legs harden. Then the adult clasps the larval case (exuvia) and pulls its abdomen and wings free and body fluids are redistributed so the adult becomes twice as large of its exuvia, The adult then rests to allow body and wings to harden ready for the maiden flight. The process takes two to three hours
