Spring colour in the cold house

            The Wintergardens comprises two greenhouses - one hot, one cold situated around a sunken courtyard, and a separate fernery. The heated house has tropical, heat loving plants whilst the other displays temperate plants with changing displays through the seasons.

It was designed in the early 1900s to replicate the style of Edwin Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll and opened in 1913.
The marble statues in the courtyard between the glass houses were added in the 1920s and 30s by local businessman William Elliot.
