Even when the cloud is down and rain threatens, the colour of the bluebells glows.
In 1930 Nicolas Size published a novel telling the tale of the Battle of Rannerdale. It was a last encounter between the Norman occupation army and the native British/Norse people.
The bluebells are the fallen Norman soldiers and spring from their spilt blood. The locals, according to Size, were victorious. A great story retold by Rosemary Sutcliffe in The Shield Ring. Little historic evidence to back it up - shame.
