2002/08/17 | after the flood | Dresden | DE

            The flood of 2002 was called a century flood. In the night from August 12th to 13th, 2002, many small streams grew up to raging rivers, which destroyed everything along their ways. The Weißeritz was one of them and destroyed among other things the narrow gauge line Freital-Hainsberg - Kipsdorf. I made these images on the first weekend after the flood in a small circle of a few houndred meters around my home. Locally  the flood was over, but only 5 kilometers away the level of the much larger Elbe river was still increasing.
Finally the flood ended in Dresden on August 26th.
Looking back the last 20 years, we saw in Germany more "century floods" with more destruction and more deaths than 2002. In the years in between we saw nearly every year new temperature records and increasing drought.
