À la Mort Subite est un café typiquement bruxellois ouvert à cette adresse en 1928. Le nom Mort Subite provient d’un jeu de dés ou de cartes, le pitjesbak (nl), joué dans un bistrot bruxellois appelé « La Cour Royale ». L'établissement fut repris au début du xxe siècle par un certain Théophile Vossen qui donna ensuite le nom « Mort Subite » à la bière (gueuze, faro, et kriek) qu’il fabriquait à la brasserie située rue des Capucins (près de la rue Haute) à Bruxelles.
Actuellement, c'est la quatrième génération Vossen qui tient 
le café.

Le journal "La Libre Belgique" le plus ancien titre de la presse francophone belge,  surnommée "Ma Tante ou la Vieille Fille de la rue Montagne-aux-Herbes Potagères"  avait son siège vis-à-vis de la Mort Subite.
Mon père engagé par le journal en 1949 en qualité d'assistant de rédaction me racontait que le bistrot servait de second bureau aux rédacteurs pendant les périodes les moins chargées. En cas d'urgence un garçon de courses allait les chercher. Engagés parfois dans un "jeu de société", ils terminaient la partie en un coup: La Mort Subite.

À la Mort Subite is a typical Brussels café that opened at this address in 1928. The name Mort Subite comes from a dice or card game, pitjesbak (nl), played in a Brussels bistro called "La Cour Royale". The establishment was taken over at the beginning of the 20th century by a certain Théophile Vossen, who then gave the name "Mort Subite" to the beer (gueuze, faro and kriek) he made at the brewery on rue des Capucins (near rue Haute) in Brussels.
The café is now run by the fourth generation of Vossens.

The newspaper "La Libre Belgique", the oldest title in the Belgian French-speaking press, nicknamed "Ma Tante ou la Vieille Fille de la rue Montagne-aux-Herbes Potagères" had its headquarters opposite the Mort Subite.
My father, who joined the paper in 1949 as an editorial assistant, told me that the bistro served as a second office for the editors during the less busy periods. In an emergency, an errand boy would go and fetch them. Sometimes they would play a 'board game' and finish the game in one go: La Mort Subite (Sudden Death).
