A Cheshire Landmark No 2.

            The Lovell Radio Telescope, usually known locally simply as Jodrell Bank, towers well above the fully grown trees of the Cheshire Plain seen at its base. Unlike Beeston Castle in my previous post, it did not start life as a Neolithic camp site (although Neolithic hunters or farmers could well have passed by).  No, it was a muddy field with trucks of surplus electronic gear left over from WWII plus a determined and very clever scientist called Bernard Lovell who thought there was a different way to study the universe than by an optical telescope.  It was unique in its day as a moveable radio telescope and is still the third largest in the world.  It can rotate 360º as well as swinging up and down. Built by 1957, although not designed as such, it did play its part in the early space journeys by both the US and the USA.  It acted for the first landings on the Moon but I believe it is now doing its primary role of searching the far reaches of the Universe for the radio waves to explain matters (no, I don't understand how they do that either !)

As an aside, when you look across Cheshire from slightly above like this you do get the impression that it is almost a forest in its own right.  The eye bounces, as it were, from tree top to tree top but when you drive its lanes you just feel how open it is.
