White-faced capuchin - a photo on Flickriver

            The white-headed capuchin (Cebus capucinus), also known as the white-faced capuchin, the white-fronted capuchin or the white-throated capuchin, is a medium-sized New World monkey. 
Native to the forests of Central America (Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama) and the extreme north-western portion of South America (west of the Andes along the Pacific Coast in Colombia and northwestern Ecuador). 
The capuchin is important to rainforest ecology for its role in dispersing seeds and pollen.
Among the best known monkeys, the white-headed capuchin is recognized as the typical companion to the organ grinder. It is a highly intelligent monkey and has been trained to assist paraplegic persons. 
The white-headed capuchin is a medium-sized monkey, weighing up to 2,8 to 4,1 kg. It is mostly black, but with a pink face and white on much of the front part of the body.  Head and body length is from 32 to 46 cm; tail length from 40 to 50 cm. 
In the wild, the white-headed capuchin is versatile, living in many different types of forest, and eating many different types of food, including fruit, other plant material, invertebrates, and small vertebrates. 
It lives in troops that can exceed 20 to 40 animals. 
It is a long-lived monkey, with a maximum recorded age of over 54 years.

De witschouderkapucijnaap (Cebus capucinus), ook wel witkeelkapucijnaap of gewone kapucijnaap genoemd, is een algemene Latijns-Amerikaanse apensoort.
De witschouderkapucijn is algemeen bekend als het aapje van de orgelman. Het is een vrij intelligente soort, die kan worden getraind tot assistent voor mensen. Een bekende witschouderkapucijnaap is het aapje Jack, een personage in de “Pirates of the Caribbean” films. 
De slanke witschouderkapucijnaap weegt 2,8 à 4,1 kg, de bodylengte is 32 à 46 cm en de staart 40 à 50 cm. Mannetjes zijn groter dan vrouwtjes. Het gezicht, de keel, buik, schouders en voorarmen zijn roomkleurig tot wit. Het lichaam en de ledematen zijn zwart. De haren op de kruin en het voorhoofd vormen bij oudere dieren soms een kuif.
De witschouderkapucijnaap komt voor van Belize en Honduras in Midden-Amerika via Nicaragua, Costa Rica en Panama tot in Zuid-Amerika, waar hij leeft ten westen van de Andes, in Noord- en West-Colombia en Noordwest-Ecuador. Het is de enige kapucijnaap in Midden-Amerika. In de Andes leeft hij tot op 2100 meter hoogte. De witschouderkapucijnaap leeft in een grote verscheidenheid aan bostypen, als droog bos, dicht regenwoud en boomplantages.
De witschouderkapucijnaap leeft in gemengde troepen van 10 tot 25 à 40 dieren, geleid door het sterkste mannetje. Het is een dagdier. Hij eet insecten, vruchten, noten, bladeren, bloemen, eieren en kleine gewervelde dieren als vogeltjes. Noten die de kapucijnaap niet open kan krijgen met zijn gebit, breekt hij open met werktuigen. De noot wordt gelegd op een grote, platte steen, waarna de kapucijnaap er op slaat met een andere zware steen, totdat de noot openbreekt.
De witschouderkapucijnaap kan vrij oud worden, in gevangenschap tot 55 jaar.
