            Grand Canyon National Park was named as an official national park in 1919.Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, the park is located in Arizona. The park covers 1,217,262 acres (492,608ha).
The canyon is often considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. It is 277 miles (446km) long, up to 18 miles (29km) wide and attains a depth of over a mile (6,000ft or 1,800m). Nearly 2 billion years of Earth's geological history have been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their channels through rock strata while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted. While the specific processes and timing that formed the canyon are the subject of debate by geologists, recent evidence suggests that the Colorado River established its course through the canyon at least 17 million years ago.
