DBZ2313 "Shire of Dowerin" Northam Avon Yard 07 02 2007

            Newly renumbered and renamed DBZ2313 "Shire of Dowerin" sits at Northam awaiting its next job.

It was previously numbered DB1593 before new owners Aurizon renumbered most WA locos to avoid duplicates with its Queensland Rail locos.

This loco is a very rare breed in WA.

Most locos only ever get named once, if at all.

This has had 3 names:
- Shire of Northam;
 - Iron Duke; and
- Shire of Dowerin

13 Class DB locos were built for WAGR by Clyde Engineering, Rosewater, NSW in 1982 and 1983.  

Their specs are very similar to the Class D and DA 1970s locos they were based on. Same engine, but uprated.

EMD 16-645E engine producing 1,715 kW (2,300 hp) instead of the D and DA’s 1,491 kW (2,000 hp).  Co-Co wheel configuration, 108tons, 90 km/h.

DB1593 was the last of the Class and delivered in May 1983 (Works No. 82-1124).

Like all the WAGR/ Westrail locos, it was sold on privatisation of Westrail in 2000 to ARG - Australian Railway Group (owned by G&W Wyoming, USA).

ARG was then sold in June 2006 to Aurizon.

All the class were stored by March 2014 after Aurizon lost the grains contracts.

Most were then stored at Beverley before a number were returned to work. At last info I have, 2 are active with Aurizon, 1 is active as shunter at Aurizon Forrestfield.

The rest including DAZ2313 were sold to CBH Group.

Ironically, CBH Group had contracted out the lost grains traffic and were now buying Aurizon’s locos to add extra capacity to that contract!
