31460 & 31417 Barrow Hill 11 06 2005

            Excuse the crappy photo - was very awkward position to get the shot.

31460 and 31417 awaiting their fate as part of Harry's parts donor locos.

31460 was built by Brush Trash at Loughborough's Falcon Works as D5696 (Works No. 297).

It was delivered to BR's Stratford depot on 4 May 1961.

It spent its whole working life on the Eastern Region (including March, Tinsley, Gateshead, Thornaby, and Immingham.

In December 1967, it had its troublesome Mirrlees engine replaced with an English Electric one like all its classmates.

In January 1974, it became 31266 under TOPS.

In February 1978, it became a freight loco at Thornaby with an isolated boiler before moving to Immingham and back to Startford.

In December 1984 after fitting with ETH, it became 31460.

It stayed at Stratford until it was stored and withdrawn in December 1992.

It was along term resident at Bescot owned by EWS.

In September 2001, it was announced it had been sold to a private owner to operate with Fragonset.

In fact Fragonset went under and it was sold to HNRC.

Moved to Barrow Hill on 18 June 2002, it remained there donating parts until it was moved on 26 October 2006 to Derby for further component recovery.

It was then hauled on 21 November 2006 to TJ Thomson's, Stockton.

TJ Thomson's scrapped it 15 January 2007.

31417 had a very similar fate.

Again built at Brush Traction's Falcon Works (Works No. 391), it was delivered to BR's March Depot as D5856 on 30 August 1962. 

Other than 1 month on the Midland Region, it also qwas totally an Eastern Region loco (March, Lincoln, Tinsley, Satley, Immingham, Gateshead & Holbeck.

Its Mirrlees engine was replaced a bit earlier (January 1966) and it was fitted with ETH in the early 1970s 

In February 1974, it there became Class 31/4 31417 when TOPS was introduced.

It worked at Holbeck from 1973 until 1987 when ETH stock was being phased out for units. 

It then moved to Immingham for its last work and was stored from the LBDB Pool.

Storage date is unknown, but like 31460 it ended up dumped at Bescot.

It then had similar moves:

Sold to Fragonset in September 2001, who promptly collapsed.

Sold again to HNRC and dragged with 31460 & 2 others to Barrow Hill on 18 June 2002.

Used as parts donor.

Straight to the scrappers by road on 3 November 2005.

Scrapped at Ron Hull’s, Rotherham on 7 January 2006.
