The nature of the Moscow region

The Istra River is one of the reservoirs in the Moscow region, which is known for its picturesque places. The artist Isaac Levitan visited the valley and was delighted with what he saw. He devoted several of his works to the local nature.

The Istra is marked on the map as a tributary of the Moskva River. A large Istra reservoir was formed on it, which is located not far from Zelenograd, and also supplies part of the capital with water.

Documentary references to the river date back to the 15th century. The main theory about the origin of the name refers to the Baltic terminology associated with the designation of a fast stream and current. The current territory of the Moscow region, where the channel was laid on the map, was inhabited by Baltic tribes in the past.

This is not the longest river in the Moscow region. The length is 113 km, and the area of the river basin is 2050 km². Istra also includes almost 200 streams, the total length of which is another 885 km. In terms of basin volume, this is the largest tributary of the Moscow River.
