Winter Trees, Metropolitan Museum Of Art

            Odd-looking skeletal trees, which turned out to be London Plane trees, cut back for winter. A striking contrast against the white, beaux arts facade of the museum, these trees are popular in cities because of their compact roots, hardiness, and resistance to pollution. This extreme pruning, pollarding, controls the tree growth and keeps the trees shaped like natural umbrellas, to create shelter from the sun in the warmer weather.
