Freshwater mussel study in Prince George's County, Maryland

            Graduate student Rachel Harrison retrieves a cage holding specimens of freshwater mussel in the Northeast Branch Anacostia River in Riverdale, Md., on Nov. 1, 2016. A team led by Dr. Lance Yonkos of the University of Maryland had placed specimens of eastern elliptio at different locations in the Anacostia watershed and assessed how many toxic contaminants the filter feeders absorbed. A secondary goal was to determine survivability of the freshwater mussel species, which historically inhabited the Anacostia watershed. "This mussel species used to be common in the Anacostia," Yonkos said. "It's not here anymore for a variety of reasons that had to do with the building of dams and other things.
