UPDATE: If you happened to have seen this image with the sparkle paper bokeh/background, please be advised that I've updated the post. I don't do this very often but tying in the maps of my beloved Delaware Water Gap was just too much to pass up.

In keeping with the context of the GPS device I've reshot the unit sitting on some maps. They are rather significant in that they show all the trails around the Mt. Tammany side of the Kittatinny range. In the lower left side you can make out the Delaware Water Gap. That's the gap in, "Gaphiker" and I've hiked those trails hundreds of times. I've never lugged around this beast of a GPS unit but did record every hike with my Garmin GPSmap 60CSx that I still use today! I hope you understand why I made the change. If you don't like the map background version I won't be upset if you withdraw your comment/fave.

It's hard to imagine the world today without GPS but it was only in 1989 that the first commercial contact for GPS was awarded to Magellan. Magellan and Trimble dominated the field but with prices from $3000-$4000 the average consumer found it a tough buy. By 1991, things started to change and companies like Garmin and Sony jumped into the market, you could now buy this IPS 360 for $1400 and a handheld Garmin for $1300, still a pretty good chunk of change but hard to resist what the technology offered. The early units were targeted at the marine industry but it would only be a couple of years before GPS becomes a household word, forever changing our lives. And, as they say, the rest is history...

The IPS 360 measures 7 inches tall X 4 inches wide X 1.5 inches thick. I find it interesting that a flickr search of this device yields only one pic and that's mine!
