Saint Louis chapel

            For more than a century, the Saint Louis Institute was a renowned boarding school for boys. The boarding school is now closed, but the monumental buildings still determine the street scene in the historic center of Oudenbosch. 

THE FOUNDERS Willem Hellemons was born in Roosendaal in 1810. At an early age joined the Cistercian monastery in Bornhem, Belgium. He completed his training as a priest in Rome. That city made a deep impression on young Willem. In 1836 he was appointed chaplain in Oudenbosch. 

Shortly afterwards he became a parish priest there. In 1840 Willem Hellemons founded a monastic order with the aim of educating the Oudenbossche youth. This congregation was named after Saint Aloysius Gonzaga. The first superior was Johannes Huybrechts; who would later become known as Father Vincentius. 

The congregation first lived in a small house on the Kaaistraat, but soon moved to the The three kings building on the Markt. After some time, children from outside Oudenbosch were also taken care of there. And so the boys' boarding school Institute Saint Louis was born, better known as' The Brothers of Saint Louis'.
