Château d'Ansembourg

            Construction of the "new castle" of Ansembourg, in Luxembourg's Eisch Valley, was started in 1639-47 as a "house of the forge", by Thomas Bidart. His descendants, mainly Thomas de Marchant in 1719 and his son, Lambert-Joseph de Marchant and d'Ansembourg, gradually expanded it. The latter was created a count in 1749 by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. Between 1730 and 1750, Count Lambert-Joseph created the Baroque gardens that still exist today. There are paths, aligned water features and a very interesting series of statues, including in particular a “mythological alley”. This path holds a key to a series of symbolic interpretations incorporated into the garden by its creator. Today, Ansembourg is an exceptional site located in a beautiful setting in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Notably, it is a protected area at national and European level. The Eisch Valley, called “the valley of the seven castles” since the 19th century, was excavated in a base of “Luxembourgish sandstone”, dating from the Triassic period. The castle of New Ansembourg is remarkable for its size and its Baroque terraced gardens, which have been largely preserved in their original form.
